From The Odyssey to Digger: The Must-See Films of 2026

Following our previous look at the major franchises and sequels returning this year, I want to shift the spotlight to the other highly anticipated films of 2026. While blockbusters like Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day will undoubtedly dominate the headlines, this year is also shaping up to be a landmark for original storytelling, auteur-driven epics, and bold new adaptations.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, Canadian Release Date: February 13

This comedy is directed by Matt Johnson, the award-winning director and screenwriter behind the Canadian Screen Award-winning film BlackBerry. Johnson co-wrote the script with Jay McCarrol (the award-winning composer of BlackBerry), and the two also star alongside Jared Raab (the award-winning cinematographer of BlackBerry). The film was one of my personal favorites at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it won the prestigious People's Choice Award: Midnight Madness.

The film is an expansion of the web series Nirvana the Band the Show created by Johnson and McCarrol over a decade ago. In the original series, the duo played exaggerated, reckless, and clumsy versions of themselves—a musical duo desperately trying to book a gig at the legendary Toronto venue, The Rivoli. In the film, when their plan to book a show at the Rivoli goes horribly wrong, Matt and Jay accidentally travel back to the year 2008.

Recently discharged from an upscale psychiatric facility where he was treated for acute depression, he is still wrestling with the pain of losing his beloved sister. Sylvia’s deathbed revelation—that she can see spirits who are still tethered to the living world, a gift that runs in their family—sits uneasily with Tate, who struggles to believe in more than what reason can explain. But when he takes up residence at a historic bed-and-breakfast on the Cape, he encounters a beautiful young woman named Wren who will challenge every assumption he has about his logical and controlled world.

Tate and Wren find themselves forging an immediate connection, one that neither has ever experienced before. But Tate gradually discovers that below the surface of Wren’s idyllic small-town life, hatred, jealousy, and greed are festering, threatening their fragile relationship just as it begins to blossom. Tate realizes that in order to free Wren from an increasingly desperate fate, he will need to unearth the truth about her past before time runs out . . . a quest that will make him doubt whether we can ever believe the stories we tell about ourselves, and the laws that govern our existence. Love—while transformative—can sometimes be frightening.

Set in a botanical garden within a medieval German university town, Silent Friend centres on a majestic Ginkgo biloba tree — which can famously live up to 1,000 years — that silently observes humans over the centuries.

In 1908, steadfast Grete (Luna Wedler) is seeking admission to the botany department of a prestigious institution. Though whip-smart, her sex is a barrier to entry into the male-dominated field and to society at large.

In 1972, at the same institution, Gundula (Marlene Burow) is conducting an experiment on what plants can sense via a single geranium. She elicits the help of her anti-social classmate Hannes (Enzo Brumm), with whom there is unspoken sexual tension. Meanwhile, in 2020, Professor Tony Wong (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai), a brilliant neurologist working at the same institution, suspects a deep relationship between what is seen and unseen.

Determined to make a connection, he seeks the supervision of world-renowned botanist Dr. Alice Sauvage (Léa Seydoux) to test his radical theory. Over the span of ages, the incredible link between these humans goes unnoticed except by the tree, to which they are all spiritually connected.
