Christopher Nolan Reimagines Homer: First Look at the Epic The Odyssey
After winning the Academy Award for Best Director last year for Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan is returning to the big screen next year with his latest project, The Odyssey. The first trailer has finally been released, giving audiences a glimpse into his next ambitious vision.
The Odyssey is scheduled to hit North American theaters on July 17, 2026. Written and directed by Oscar Best Director winner Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), the film is an adaptation of the ancient Greek epic poem of the same name by Homer. The production reunites Nolan with several frequent collaborators, including Matt Damon (Interstellar, Oppenheimer), Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar), and Robert Pattinson (Tenet). They are joined by a powerhouse ensemble featuring Spider-Man star Tom Holland, Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave), Zendaya (Spider-Man franchise), and Oscar Best Actress winner Charlize Theron (Monster). The massive supporting cast includes Jon Bernthal (The Punisher), Benny Safdie (Good Time), John Leguizamo (John Wick franchise), Himesh Patel (Yesterday), Will Yun Lee (The Good Doctor), Mia Goth (Frankenstein), Elliot Page (Inception), Bill Irwin (Legion), Samantha Morton (The Whale), Corey Hawkins (In Heights), and Jovan Adepo (Babylon).
Behind the scenes, Nolan is once again working with his Oscar-winning creative trio from Oppenheimer: cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, editor Jennifer Lame, and composer Ludwig Göransson. In a technical first, while Nolan has used IMAX film cameras for segments of his previous work, he has reportedly filmed the entirety of this project using a newly developed IMAX film camera. The story follows the Greek hero Odysseus (Matt Damon), on his long journey home following the fall of Troy. After the ten-year Trojan War concludes, Odysseus wanders for another decade before he can return to his homeland of Ithaca. Along the way, he faces mythical challenges including the cyclops Polyphemus, sirens, and the enchantress Circe (Charlize Theron). Back at home, everyone believes him to be dead, leaving his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland) to deal with a swarm of aggressive suitors competing to marry Penelope.
In addition to the trailer, the studio has released the film's first official poster.
Christopher Nolan remains one of Hollywood's most successful directors, with The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises surpassing the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Having previously earned nominations for his screenwriting and directing on films like Memento, Inception, and Dunkirk, he finally secured the Best Director and Best Picture wins last year for Oppenheimer. Given the blend of war, action, and fantasy elements—and one of the strongest casts in recent memory—The Odyssey is poised to be another massive hit. Fans are now waiting to see if the film can maintain the high standard the world has come to expect from a Nolan production.
