Record-Breaking Sinners: Ryan Coogler’s Epic Leads the 2026 Oscar Race with 16 Nods

As January draws to a close, the biggest event in cinema has arrived: the nominations for the annual Academy Awards have finally been announced.

The 98th Oscars ceremony will take place on the morning of March 15. This year’s frontrunner is Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which earned a staggering 16 nominations. This breaks the long-standing record of 14 nominations previously held by films like Titanic and La La Land. Another Warner Bros. heavyweight, One Battle After Another, follows closely with 13 nominations. Having already swept Best Picture, Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson), and Best Screenplay (Paul Thomas Anderson) at the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards, it remains the film to beat in the major categories. Meanwhile, Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value each secured 9 nominations. Notably, Norway’s Sentimental Value has become the most-nominated international film of the year.

The Best Picture lineup features two international titles: Norway’s Sentimental Value and Brazil’s The Secret Agent (which earned 4 nominations total). Sentimental Value recently dominated the European Film Awards, winning six prizes including Best Film and Best Director, making it the heavy favorite for Best International Feature. In a surprising turn, the Cannes Palme d’Or winner It Was Just an Accident failed to secure a Best Picture slot, though it was nominated for Best International Feature. Conversely, the high-octane F1 surprised pundits by snagging a spot in the top 10 for Best Picture.

Sentimental Value and One Battle After Another lead the acting tallies with four nominations each. Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value) is the current favorite for Best Supporting Actor following his Golden Globe win. Sinners earned three acting nods, including a surprise nomination for Delroy Lindo for Best Supporting Actor—a slot many expected to go to Paul Mescal (Hamnet), who was one of the morning's biggest snubs. For the lead categories, Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme) and Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) are the current favorites after their recent Golden Globe and Critics' Choice victories. The race will likely tighten as the BAFTA and various Guild Awards are handed out in late February and early March.
