Jessie Buckley’s Post-Globe Debut: New Trailer for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!

Hot on the heels of last year’s Frankenstein, another major feature reimagining these iconic characters is set to hit theaters this year: The Bride!. The film is headlined by Jessie Buckley, who has recently won a Golden Globe Award for Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.

The Bride! is set to premiere in North America on March 6. The film is directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Lost Daughter) and is based on the 90-year-old movie Bride of Frankenstein. It starsGolden Globe Best Female Actor winner Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) as Frankenstein's bride and former Batman actor and Golden Globe Best Male Actor winner Christian Bale (Vice) as Frankenstein's monster. The cast also includes the director's husband, Venice Best Actor winner Peter Sarsgaard (The Batman, Memory), BAFTA Best Actress winner Annette Bening (American Beauty), the director's brother, BAFTA winner Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain), and Oscar winner Penélope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona). The score will be composed by Oscar winner Hildur Guðnadóttir (Joker).

A lonely Frankenstein (Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious (five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening) to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride (Buckley) is born. What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance! Jessie Buckley is no stranger to director Maggie Gyllenhaal, having previously earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, The Lost Daughter. Buckley’s momentum has only accelerated; her performance in Hamnet received widespread acclaim last year. Just this past month, she swept both the Critics' Choice Award and the Golden Globe for Best Actress, firmly establishing her as the frontrunner for this year's Oscars. Her role in The Bride! is now one of the most anticipated performances of the spring season.

Warner Bros also released the new posters for the film.

Bride of Frankenstein was a sequel to the 1931 film Frankenstein, and both were based on Mary Shelley's gothic novel. The novel has been adapted into films and series many times. Universal Pictures, for example, had planned to launch a "Dark Universe" film franchise with the 2017 film The Mummy. Bride of Frankenstein was meant to be the second film in that universe, with Bill Condon directing and Oscar winner Angelina Jolie (Girl, Interrupted) and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) attached to star as the Bride and Frankenstein's monster, respectively. However, due to The Mummy's poor box office and reviews, both the "Dark Universe" and its Bride of Frankenstein project were canceled.

While The Bride! prepares for its theatrical debut, it follows in the footsteps of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which premiered on Netflix late last year. Del Toro's version featured a star-studded cast including Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi (Euphoria) as the Monster. Elordi recently made waves by winning the Critics' Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role, while the film itself secured three additional technical awards for its stunning craft.
