DC’s Lanterns Trailer Teases a Grounded Earth-Based Murder Mystery
As HBO Max’s House of the Dragon prepares to wrap up its explosive third season in two weeks, DC’s highly anticipated Green Lantern series, Lanterns, is set to take over the spotlight in mid-August.
Lanterns is locked in for a global premiere on Crave on August 16. The first season will consist of eight episodes. The series is showrun by Chris Mundy (Ozark), who also co-created the show alongside acclaimed comic book writer Tom King and visionary creator Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Watchmen). The directorial lineup features premier television talent, including James Hawes (The Amateur), Stephen Williams (Watchmen), Geeta Patel (House of the Dragon), and Alik Sakharov (Ozark).
The dynamic ensemble cast includes:
Kyle Chandler (Emmy Outstanding Lead Actor winner, Friday Night Lights) as legendary Green Lantern Hal Jordan
Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) as new recruit John Stewart
Nathan Fillion (Castle) returning as Green Lantern Guy Gardner
Kelly Macdonald (Emmy winner) in a lead role
Ulrich Thomsen (The Commune) as the villainous Sinestro
Steering away from the galactic cosmic adventures seen in the comic books and the 2011 film, Lanterns draws heavy inspiration from dark, grounded detective thrillers like True Detective and Slow Horses. The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery with cosmic ties as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. Based on the newly released footage, the shape-shifting alien race known as the Manhunters—who can disguise themselves as anyone—appear to be the central threat working behind the scenes.
Following the 2022 studio overhaul under co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, Lanterns serves as the third television series in the new DC Universe (DCU), following the animated Creature Commandos and Peacemaker Season 2. The franchise launched its theatrical slate with Superman and Supergirl, with Nathan Fillion previously debuting as Guy Gardner in Superman.
Looking ahead, DC's release calendar features:
Clayface (Body-horror feature film releasing October 2026)
Man of Tomorrow (Superman sequel releasing July 2027, featuring both Aaron Pierre and Nathan Fillion)
Creature Commandos Season 2 (Officially renewed)
Jimmy Olsen Spin-off Series (Beginning production later this year)
The upcoming Jimmy Olsen spin-off series, starring Skyler Gisondo, is framed as a true-crime mockumentary following Daily Planet journalists as they investigate cases involving superpowered villains. Season 1 will focus on Gorilla Grodd, voiced by Jimmy Tatro (American Vandal).
