DCU's Woman of Tomorrow: Milly Alcock Flies into Action in First Supergirl Trailer
As 2025 is quickly coming to an end, major studios are continuing to release trailers for their big 2026 productions this month, including the DC Universe's Supergirl.
Supergirl is set to premiere in North America on June 26 next year. Directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella), the film is adapted from the 2021 comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. It will contrast Supergirl, who witnessed the death of all her loved ones on Krypton and grew up alone, with Superman, who was adopted and loved by humans on Earth. Two-time Emmy winner Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones) will serve as the music composer. Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) plays Supergirl/Kara Zor-El. David Krumholtz (Num3ers) and Cannes Best Actress winner Emily Beecham (Little Joe) play her parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze, respectively. Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard) plays the main villain. Jason Momoa will also star in the film, but he will no longer portray Aquaman. Instead, he will play the comic character Lobo. When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.
Supergirl/Kara Zor-El made her first DC Universe (DCU) appearance in the end-credits scene of the first live-action DCU film, Superman, which was released this past summer to positive reviews and grossed over $600 million, currently ranking ninth at the box office this year. The first live-action DCU series, Peacemaker Season 2, also aired on HBO Max this summer. The upcoming DC releases for next year (2026) include Supergirl and the live-action series Lanterns in the Summer and the film Clayface in September. Looking ahead, DC is scheduled to release the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, in 2027, which will again be written and directed by the first film's director and DCU Chairman, James Gunn. However, Netflix recently announced interest in acquiring Warner Bros. Pictures, the parent company of the DC Universe, with Paramount Pictures also interested in the competition. This potential acquisition could impact the future development of the DCU.
During the era of the Christopher Reeve Superman films in the 1970s and 80s, the studio also released a Supergirl movie starring Helen Slater. Later, CBS launched a Supergirl TV series in 2015, starring Melissa Benoist. The show moved to The CW starting with its second season and became part of the Arrowverse until its final season in 2021. Before the current DC framchise was rebooted, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film The Flash (2023) featured Supergirl, played by Sasha Calle. Following the franchise reboot, the role was recast, with Milly Alcock now portraying the DCU's Supergirl.
