Sauron’s Armies March: First Teaser Trailer and Premiere Date Revealed for The Rings of Power Season 3
After a two-year hiatus, Season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to premiere this November, promising even more epic, action-packed battle sequences than previous seasons.
Season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere globally on Prime Video on November 11. Like its predecessors, the season consists of eight episodes, with the first four episodes dropping on release day, followed by two-episode drops every Wednesday. Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay return alongside directors Charlotte Brändström and Sanaa Hamri. Joining the directorial team this season is Stefan Schwartz (The Americans).
Key new cast additions include:
Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things) as Galadriel’s long-lost husband, Celeborn.
Andrew Richardson as Elendil’s son, Anárion.
Simon Pegg (Mission: Impossible franchise) providing the voice for the Balrog, a iconic menace previously featured in the film trilogy.
In Season Three, Middle-earth is at war. Five years have passed since the fall of Eregion. Sauron’s armies have marched across the whole of the world, conquering all in their path. Only a few isolated pockets stand between the Dark Lord and total victory – Khazad-dûm, where the Dwarves are now sealed deep within their mountain halls, and the elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell, which are protected by their Three Rings. But deep in the land of Mordor, in his newly completed tower of Barad-dûr, the Dark Lord toils day and night, obsessed with harnessing a power that will bring the last of his enemies to their knees: One Ring to rule them all... Now, all the free peoples of Middle-earth – Dwarves, Elves, Men, and Wizards alike – must find a way to come together, in a race against time to prevent Sauron from achieving his goal of utter domination of all life…
Amazon originally acquired global television rights for The Lord of the Rings in 2017 after a bidding war against Netflix and HBO, paying nearly $250 million. The first season debuted in 2022 as Prime Video’s most-watched original series, while Season 2 followed in 2024 and picked up a BAFTA Award for Best Special, Visual & Graphic Effects.
Beyond television, Middle-earth is preparing for a major theatrical revival over the next few years:
1. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum
Scheduled for a North American release on December 17, 2027, the film will be directed by Andy Serkis (Venom: Let There Be Carnage), who will also reprise his iconic role as Gollum.
Returning Stars: Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen return as Frodo Baggins and Gandalf, alongside Lee Pace reprising his role as the Elvenking Thranduil from The Hobbit trilogy.
New Cast Additions: Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey) steps into the role of "Strider" (Aragorn), originally portrayed by Viggo Mortensen. The film also stars Leo Woodall (One Day), Oscar Best Actress winner Kate Winslet (The Reader), and Golden Globe Best Actress winner Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's Gambit).
Plot: Set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies, the story follows Strider and Gandalf as they embark on a dangerous quest to hunt down Gollum and uncover critical information about the One Ring before he can reveal its location to Sauron.
2. The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past
Warner Bros. is also developing a live-action feature film written by talk-show host Stephen Colbert, his son Peter McGee, and original LOTR trilogy screenwriter Philippa Boyens.
Plot Details: Adapting Chapters 3 through 8 of The Fellowship of the Ring—focusing heavily on Chapter 8, "Fogs on the Barrow-downs"—the story will feature Tom Bombadil, a fan-favorite character omitted from prior adaptations.
Premise: Fourteen years after Frodo leaves Middle-earth, Sam, Merry, and Pippin retrace the steps of their first journey. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, uncovers a buried secret and sets out to learn why the War of the Ring nearly ended in failure before it even truly began.
