DC Multiverse! Peacemaker Red Band Trailer Revealed!

The second season of Peacemaker, the first live-action series of the DC Universe, is set to premiere next week. HBO Max has released an red band trailer to get fans ready.

Season 2 of Peacemaker will premiere on Crave on August 21st. Like the first season, it will have eight episodes. DC Studios co-chairman, director, and writer of Superman, James Gunn, will direct three episodes and write the scripts for all eight. Other episode directors include Greg Mottola (Paul), Peter Sollett (Metal Lord), and Alethea Jones. In addition to the returning cast from Season 1, new main cast members include Frank Grillo (who voiced Rick Flag Sr. in the DCU animated series Creature Commandos), Sol Rodríguez as the comic book character Sasha Bordeaux, comedian Tim Meadows (Saturday Night Live), David Denman (The Office), and James Gunn's frequent collaborator Michael Rooker.

Season 1 of this series was part of the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU). This new season, however, is a part of the newly rebooted DC Universe, and it is expected to clarify the relationship between the two cinematic universes. As the first DC project since Superman, the trailer for Peacemaker Season 2 mentions the Superman villain Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) and his multiverse portal. The portals in the trailer, similar to those in Monsters, Inc., are likely a similar device to provide a multiverse explanation, suggesting this will be a major point of focus for the new DCU. The previous teaser trailer also features three characters from Superman: Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn). Based on the trailer, one of the season's main storylines will revolve around the protagonist, Peacemaker/Christopher Smith (John Cena), being hunted by Rick Flag Sr. and A.R.G.U.S. as he faces the consequences of his past mistakes—specifically, killing Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) in the 2021 film The Suicide Squad.

Last month, HBO Max released the latest poster for the season at San Diego Comic-Con:

In 2022, Warner Bros. decided to reboot the DC film franchise and appointed James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios. In 2023, they announced the projects for the first chapter of the DC Universe, "Gods and Monsters." This slate includes: the animated series Creature Commandos (which premiered last December), Superman (released last month), and upcoming films and series like Supergirl, the Clayface movie, and the live-action series Lanterns. Superman was released last month to positive reviews and has grossed nearly $600 million, marking a good start for the new cinematic universe. James Gunn is already writing the script for the follow-up film.

Typically, when a film franchise is rebooted, characters are recast and there are no ties to previous movies. However, because James Gunn wrote and directed both the DCEU's The Suicide Squad and its spin-off series Peacemaker, some of their elements will be integrated into the new DCU. This includes returning actors like Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and the cast of Peacemaker. In an interview with IGN last year, James Gunn clarified how the plots of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1 would be integrated into the DCU. He stated that specific events from those two projects will be mentioned in DCU works, making them officially canon. For example, Creature Commandos already referenced Rick Flag Jr.'s death from The Suicide Squad, making that event canon in the new DCU. Peacemaker Season 2 will now continue that story.
