DC Developing Superman Jimmy Olsen Spinoff Series and a V for Vendetta Show!
Following the releases of the first DC Universe (DCU) live-action film, Superman, and the second season of the live-action series Peacemaker this year, the DCU is set to deliver more next year, including the live-action films Supergirl and Clayface, as well as the live-action series Lanterns. Last week, it was reported that DC is developing two new series: a Superman spinoff centering on Jimmy Olsen within the DCU, and a separate series based on V for Vendetta.
Superman Jimmy Olsen Spinoff
The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported last week that Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda (American Vandal ) will develop a spinoff series for the DCU focusing on the character Jimmy Olsen, with Skyler Gisondo returning to reprise the role. The series will follow Jimmy Olsen and other reporters at the Daily Planet as they investigate cases involving super-powered villains. The villain for the first season is reported to be Gorilla Grodd. Variety added that the series will be presented as a true-crime documentary hosted by Jimmy Olsen. Perrault and Yacenda's previous works, American Vandal and Players, were both mockumentary series and received positive reviews, with the former earning two nominations for the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Limited Series.
In addition to this spinoff, DCU Chairman and Superman director James Gunn is also developing the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. The film is scheduled to begin shooting next April for a July 2027 release. The Wrap reported last week that Superman (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) will team up to fight the villain Brainiac in this sequel.
V for Vendetta
Variety exclusively reported last week that HBO and DC are developing a series based on V for Vendetta and have tapped Pete Jackson to write it. The original graphic novel was created by Alan Moore. Set in a futurist totalitarian England, a country without freedom or faith, a mysterious man in a white porcelain mask strikes back against the oppressive overlords on behalf of the voiceless. Armed with only knives and his wits, V, as he's called, aims to bring about change in this horrific new world. His only ally? A young woman named Evey Hammond. And she is in for much more than she ever bargained for...
The comic was previously adapted into a film of the same name in 2005, directed by James McTeigue and written by the Wachowskis (The Matrix franchise). It starred Oscar Best Actress winner Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Hugo Weaving (The Matrix), Stephen Rea (Prime Target), and John Hurt (Harry Potter film series).
