Twenty years after its last big-screen iteration, Miami Vice is being adapted into a feature film once again, anchored by two acclaimed award-winning leads.
Universal Pictures released the first look photos for Miami Vice '85 last week, formally unveiling the character looks for its two leads: Oscar Best Actor winner Michael B. Jordan (Sinners) and Golden Globe Best Actor winner Austin Butler (Elvis), who star as Ricardo Tubbs and James "Sonny" Crockett, respectively. The film is scheduled to open in North American theaters on May 19, 2028. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick, F1), the script is penned by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick) and Emmy-nominated screenwriter Dan Gilroy (Andor). The story will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami. Oscar winner Claudio Miranda (Life of Pi), a frequent collaborator of Kosinski, serves as director of photography.
Deadline has steadily reported on the film's expanding ensemble cast over the past two months. Joining the lineup are Alden Ehrenreich (Weapons), Whitney Peak (2021’s Gossip Girl), Camila Morrone (The Night Manager Season 2), Danny Ramirez (Captain America: Brave New World), Andrew Schulz (Street Fighter), Edi Gathegi (Superman), Walton Goggins (Fallout), André Holland (Moonlight), Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers), and Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus Season 2). Additionally, John Leguizamo (The Odyssey) is reported to play the main antagonist.
The original Miami Vice TV series aired from 1984 to 1989, created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive produced by Michael Mann. In the series, Ricardo and Sonny were played by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson, respectively (the latter winning a Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor for the role). Michael Mann adapted and directed a film version in 2006, starring Academy Award Best Actor winner Jamie Foxx (Ray) and two-time Golden Globe Best Actor winner Colin Farrell (In Bruges, The Banshees of Inisherin) as the leads. A case involving drug lords and murder in South Florida takes a personal turn for undercover detectives Sonny Crockett (Colin Farrell) and Ricardo Tubbs (Jamie Foxx). Unorthodox Crockett gets involved romantically with the Chinese-Cuban wife of a trafficker of arms and drugs, while Tubbs deals with an assault on those he loves.
