Round One, Fight! Street Fighter Brings Stacked Cast to Theaters This October
Although the summer movie season has drawn to a close, a strong lineup of action blockbusters is slated for release over the next few months, including Street Fighter, based on the popular video game franchise.
The live-action film Street Fighter is scheduled for release in North America on October 16. Directed by Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip) and written by Dalan Musson (Captain America: Brave New World), the film is based on the popular fighting video game series of the same name. Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!

In addition to Street Fighter, another major fighting video game adaptation, Mortal Kombat II, is scheduled for release in North America on May 8 next year. The film was originally scheduled for this October but was unexpectedly delayed in late August to the summer release window next May. This move suggests the studio has high confidence in the movie's potential. It remains to be seen how the two fighting game adaptations will perform at the box office.
Aside from Street Fighter, another video game adaptation, Mortal Kombat II, opened in theaters this past May. While it received better critical reception and box office results than its predecessor, it grossed roughly $130 million globally—a somewhat underwhelming performance given its prime release window and $80 million production budget. It remains to be seen how Street Fighter will perform at the box office.
