Aunt Gladys's Origin Story! Weapons Prequel Film in Development!
Less than a week after its release, the studio behind Weapons is already planning a prequel film!
According to sources cited by The Hollywood Reporter, the studios behind Weapons, Warner Bros. and New Line, are in talks with director and writer Zach Cregger to develop a prequel film about the character Aunt Gladys’ (Amy Madigan) origin story. The report notes that a chapter of the original Weapons script focused on Gladys's background but was ultimately cut for time. Now, the studios are interested in expanding this material into a full feature film. The film, which was just released last week, had a better-than-expected opening weekend in North America, grossing over $43 million. Its worldwide total has already surpassed $80 million, so it's no surprise that the studios are moving so quickly to plan a prequel.
A prequel might not be made in the short term, as Zach Cregger has several other projects in the works. He is set to direct a Resident Evil reboot, which will star Austin Abrams from Weapons and is tentatively scheduled for release in September of next year. He has also written a sci-fi script titled Flood. Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter revealed last week that before he wrote Barbarian, Cregger wrote a script for a DC Comics film called Henchmen, which he has described as his favorite script he's ever written. The report states that the film would revolve around a low-level Gotham City henchmen who, through a stroke of luck, manages to incapacitate Batman, leading him to notoriety. Batman, Harley Quinn, and the Joker are also said to appear in the movie. Given that DC Studios is also a part of Warner Bros. and Cregger's recent success, it is highly likely that DC will seriously consider moving forward with this project.
Weapons was written and directed by Zach Cregger, whose previous film, Barbarian, was praised for its creativity and surprising plot. The ensemble cast includes Marvel villain Thanos actor Josh Brolin, three-time Emmy winner Julia Garner (Ozark), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange series), and Golden Globe winner Amy Madigan (Roe vs. Wade). Cregger's reputation led to a bidding war among multiple studios for the rights to this new film.
