The Batman: Part II Resumes Production as Steven Soderbergh Takes Over Set

After production was paused for nearly two weeks, The Batman Part II will resume shooting with Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh taking over the remaining shoot.

According to an exclusive report from Deadline today, Steven Soderbergh—the Academy Award-winning director behind the Ocean’s Trilogy and Traffic—will join the crew of The Batman: Part II to help complete the final few weeks of filming. It was reported earlier this month that director Matt Reeves had to temporarily step away from the set due to family reasons, bringing production to a temporary halt. The Deadline report noted that Soderbergh, a longtime admirer of Reeves' work, offered to step in and finish the remaining shoot after learning Reeves could not continue on set. Moving forward, Soderbergh will helm the set according to Reeves’ original vision, while Reeves will return to oversee post-production personally.

Scheduled for theatrical release in February 2028, The Batman Part II began filming this past summer. The film is directed by Reeves, who co-wrote the script with Terminator Zero creator Mattson Tomlin. Alongside Robert Pattinson returning as Batman/Bruce Wayne, original cast members Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis are set to reprise their roles. New additions to the cast include Sebastian Stan (Marvel’s Captain America franchise), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Brian Tyree Henry (Godzilla x Kong), and Sebastian Koch (Homeland). Additionally, Oscar-winning cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt (Mank) serves as director of photography

The Batman was released in 2022 during the late stages of the pandemic, grossing over $750 million worldwide and finishing as the seventh highest-grossing film of the year while earning positive reviews. Two years ago, HBO released the spin-off series The Penguin, featuring Colin Farrell returning as the titular character, which earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor, while co-star Cristin Milioti won a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Actress. Although The Batman Part II is based on DC Comics, it currently remains separate from DC's main film franchise, the DC Universe (DCU). Moving forward, the DCU is set to release the body-horror film Clayface this month, followed by the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, next July.

Steven Soderbergh previously won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Sex, Lies, and Videotape, later taking home the Academy Award for Best Director for Traffic and a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Director for Behind the Candelabra. He remains one of the most prolific filmmakers in Hollywood, with three feature films released and premiered last year alone—Presence, Black Bag, and The Christophers—all of which received strong reviews.
