Matt Damon and Sandra Oh to Lead Daniels’ New Sci-Fi Epic at Universal
Ever since their mind-bending Everything Everywhere All at Once swept the 2023 Academy Awards—including a win for Best Picture—the filmmaking duo known as Daniels have been quietly developing their next big project. This year, cameras finally look ready to roll.
Matt Damon, Sandra Oh, Charles Melton, Sean Kaufman, Silvia Dionicio, and Michael Gandolfini are all reportedly in talks to star in the upcoming feature written and directed by Daniels.
According to a series of exclusive reports by Deadline over the past two weeks, Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Charles Melton (BeefSeason 2), Sean Kaufman (For All Mankind), Silvia Dionicio (Task), Michael Gandolfini (Daredevil: Born Again), as well as rising stars Jackson Kelly, Kerrice Brooks, and Thalia Dudek, are all reportedly in talks to star in the upcoming feature written and directed by Oscar Best Director winning duo Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert). The project, which already features Golden Globe Best Actor winner Matt Damon (The Martian) in the lead role, is tentatively scheduled for release on November 19, 2027. While exact plot details are being kept under wraps, reports suggest the narrative will wildly blend elements of climate change, time travel, and superhero tropes. Months ago, rumors circulated that Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling (La La Land) was eyed for the lead, though it was quickly confirmed that scheduling conflicts prevented his involvement.
Daniels first burst onto the feature filmmaking scene with 2016's Swiss Army Man, which premiered to positive reviews at the Sundance Film Festival and earned them the Directing Award. Their follow-up, 2022's Everything Everywhere All at Once, became a global cultural phenomenon, earning critical adoration and winning seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. While their first two features were indie hits distributed by A24, this highly anticipated next movie shifts to a major studio setup with Universal Pictures. With a significantly larger canvas and budget, fans are eager to see if the duo will maintain their signature brand of absurd, heartfelt, and darkly comedic maximalism.
