Dragonfire Returns: House of the Dragon Season 3 Set for June Premiere

HBO has finally announced the premiere date for the third season of the Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, and released a brand-new trailer:

House of the DragonSeason 3 is set to premiere on June 21 2026 on Crave. Ryan Condal returns to lead the production as showrunner. The season features a mix of returning directors and a high-profile newcomer: Clare Kilner, Andrij Parekh, and Loni Peristere all return, alongside Nina Lopez-Corrado, who recently directed episodes of HBO’s The Last of Us. In addition to the original cast, new cast members of this season include James Norton (Little Women), Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy), Dan Fogler (Fantastic Beasts franchise), Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey) and Barry Sloan (Revenge). Although Season 3 has not yet premiered, HBO has already renewed the show for a fourth season, which has been confirmed as the final chapter of the Targaryen civil war.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the series is set 200 years before Game of Thrones. While Martin was heavily involved in the early stages, it is noted that he has largely stepped back from production following creative disagreements with showrunner Ryan Condal regarding the adaptation’s direction.

House of the Dragon Season 3

Starting in 2011, Game of Thrones became a global phenomenon, winning Best Drama Series for its final four seasons and earning Peter Dinklage four Emmys. Despite its record-breaking success, the 2019 finale remains a point of contention among fans due to its perceived decline in writing quality—a shadow the new prequels are working hard to move past.

In addition to House of the Dragon, another Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, finished airing its first season on HBO earlier this year. Based on the novella collection Tales of Dunk and Egg, the first season adapted the story The Hedge Knight. Set a century before the events of Game of Thrones, it follows the meeting and travels of a young Aegon V Targaryen (played by Dexter Sol Ansell)—the great-grandfather of Daenerys Targaryen—and Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey). HBO has already renewed the series for a second season, which will adapt the novella The Sworn Sword. Production is currently underway, with a premiere expected in 2027.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. is developing a prequel feature film and has tapped Beau Willimon—showrunner of House of Cards and writer for the Star Wars series Andor—to pen the script. The movie will adapt the story of Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. George R.R. Martin previously revealed that Warner Bros. plans to produce the film on a grand scale comparable to Dune. Martin has chronicled Aegon the Conqueror's history in his books The World of Ice & Fire and Fire & Blood, detailing how he conquered six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros to become the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and the founding monarch of the Targaryen dynasty.
