Less Fire, More Sword: Game of Thrones Prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Drops Teaser
Following the success of House of the Dragon, another Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is set to premiere next year, and HBO released the teaser trailer today.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on HBO on January 18 next year. It is the second spin-off from Game of Thrones, following House of the Dragon, and is adapted from the novella collection Tales of Dunk and Egg. The first season will adapt the short story The Hedge Knight. The story is set 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones and follows the adventures of the future Daenerys Targaryen's great-grandfather, Aegon V Targaryen (played by Dexter Sol Ansell), as a young boy, and his traveling companion, Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey). The series is created by novel series author George R. R. Martin and Ira Parker (Better Things). Directing duties are handled by Owen Harris (who directed the Emmy-winning Black Mirror episode San Junipero) and Sarah Adina Smith (who won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directing – Miniseries or TV Film for Lessons in Chemistry). Other cast members include Finn Bennett (Warfare), Olivier Award-winner Bertie Carvel (The Crown), Daniel Ings (The Gentlemen), and Sam Spruell (Outlaw King).
A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, series co-creator Ira Parker revealed that, unlike Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, this show will not feature an animated title sequence, opting instead for a title card written in a medieval font. The biggest difference from its predecessors is that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will not revolve around dragons and magic, nor will the story be told from the perspective of the nobility and kings. It is described as feeling more like a 14th-century British medieval knight's tale, focusing on the road-trip adventures of two unlikely companions.
In addition to the trailer, HBO also released a new poster a few days ago.
Game of Thrones, based on George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, premiered in 2011 and broke multiple HBO viewing records, winning the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series for its fifth through eighth seasons, with Peter Dinklage winning Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for four times. The final season, which premiered in 2019, saw a significant decline in quality and is widely regarded as a poor conclusion.
In addition to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the third season of the other Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, is nearing the end of production and is also expected to premiere next year. House of the Dragon, which premiered in 2022 and was nominated for an Emmy for its first season, is set two centuries before Game of Thrones (and a century before A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms). It is based on Martin's novel Fire & Blood and is expected to conclude with a fourth season.
