Dave Bautista in Talks to Play Kratos in Amazon’s ‘God of War’ Series Following Ryan Hurst Injury
Months into production on the live-action television adaptation of God of War, Marvel alumnus Dave Bautista is in negotiations to take over the iconic role of Kratos following an on-set injury to original lead Ryan Hurst.
Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy franchise) is in talks to replace Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) as Kratos in the live-action television adaptation of God of War.
According to reports from Deadline, Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy franchise) is in talks with Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to replace Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) as Kratos in the live-action television adaptation of God of War. Filming originally commenced in February. However, after completing four episodes, Hurst suffered a severe bicep tear during an action sequence in June that required surgery and an extended recovery period. The injury forced producers to recast the role. Pre-production is slated to resume in mid-August, with cameras rolling again in Vancouver by mid-October to reshoot the first four episodes.
The series is created and showrun by Ronald D. Moore (For All Mankind), with Emmy winner Frederick E. O. Toye (Shōgun) directing the first two episodes. In addition to Ryan Hurst, the main cast includes:
Callum Vinson (The Night Agent) as Atreus, son of Kratos
Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga) as Thor
Teresa Palmer (The Fall Guy) as Sif, wife of Thor
Max Parker (Boots) as Heimdall
Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) as Odin, All-Father
Ed Skrein (Jurassic World Rebirth) as Baldur, son of Odin
Based on Sony PlayStation’s blockbuster video game franchise, the God of War series storyline follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human. Created by David Jaffe in 2005, the franchise spans nine main games and has sold over 60 million copies worldwide. The original entries and the 2018 Norse soft-reboot won numerous Game of the Year awards and are widely considered among the greatest video games ever made. God of War arrives amidst a boom in major video game adaptations: a live-action Elden Ring feature film has already begun principal photography, while television series for Far Cry (currently casting), Assassin's Creed (currently filming), and Baldur’s Gate are all actively in development.
