HBO and Craig Mazin Team Up for Baldur's Gate 3 Sequel Series
Following the monumental success of The Last of Us, HBO is developing a live-action series based on the legendary RPG franchise Baldur's Gate.
Deadline exclusively reported yesterday that HBO is developing a live-action series based on the legendary RPG franchise Baldur's Gate. Following the monumental success of The Last of Us, the network has once again tapped Craig Mazin to serve as the creator and showrunner. Unlike his adaptation of The Last of Us, this series will not be a retelling of the games. Instead, it is being designed as a direct continuation of Baldur's Gate 3, exploring the ramifications of the game's climax through a mix of beloved returning characters and original faces. The HBO series is being developed to co-exist alongside Netflix's upcoming series, The Forgotten Realms. Written by showrunner Drew Crevello (WeCrashed), the Netflix series will explore the broader Dungeons & Dragons world. While they are on different platforms, both will share the deep lore of the Forgotten Realms setting.
The land of Faerûn is under siege. Captured and infected by the invading Mind Flayers, will you choose to resist their corruption or embrace the mysterious power that is growing inside you? Embody bespoke Origin Characters or create your own custom protagonist and experience a dynamic story that is shaped by every roll of the dice. Join forces with a cast of complex characters as you loot, battle and romance your way through the Forgotten Realms – and beyond. Roll for initiative and leverage both advantage and disadvantage with fluid, tactical combat. The fate of the Forgotten Realms is in your hands.
The announcement of Mazin's next project has added fuel to the rumors that Season 3 of The Last of Us will be its last. Production is set to begin next month. Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Bumblebee) will take over the role of Manny, replacing Season 2’s Danny Ramirez due to scheduling conflicts. Clea DuVall (Veep) has also joined the cast. Meanwhile, original game creator Neil Druckmann and co-writer Halley Gross are not attached to the writing team for this final installment, leaving the narrative entirely in Mazin's hands.
Beyond the massive Baldur’s Gate announcement, several of the gaming world’s most iconic franchises are moving into active production for the big and small screens. Elden Ring is being adapted into a live-action feature film, while Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed and Gold of War are being adapted into live action series. Among them, Assassin’s Creed, created by Roberto Patino (Westworld) David Wiener (Halo), is slated to start filming this year. Toby Wallace (The Society) and Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing) will star as the central duo. The cast also includes Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, and Tanzyn Crawford.
