According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Superman star Nicholas Hoult has joined the cast of HBO's Harry Potter series for its second season as the vain and narcissistic defense against the dark arts professor, Gilderoy Lockhart. The character plays a central role in the franchise's second entry, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and was portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation. Principal photography for Season 2 is scheduled to begin this fall. Season 1 staff writer Jon Brown has been promoted to co-showrunner alongside Francesca Gardiner (His Dark Materials).
The series promises a faithful decade-long adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven books, dedicating one full season per novel. Season 1 adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and premieres on Crave in Canada on December 25, 2026. The debut season features direction on select episodes by Emmy winner Mark Mylod (Succession) and an original score by two-time Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer (Dune, The Lion King).

Warner Bros. expanded the universe with the Fantastic Beasts prequel series starting in 2016. While originally planned as a five-film arc, diminished box office returns and mixed critical reception following its 2018 and 2022 sequels led the studio to quietly shelve the final two installments. Combined, the 11 theatrical films have grossed nearly $10 billion worldwide, ranking as the fourth highest-grossing film franchise in cinema history. The television reboot is expected to ignite a similar global phenomenon when it debuts this winter.
