Superman and Lex Luthor Team Up? Man of Tomorrow to be Released in 2027!
Less than two months after the release of Superman, director James Gunn has already announced the release date for the next Superman film!
Today, James Gunn announced on X that the DC film Man of Tomorrow will be released in North America on July 9, 2027, and he shared a concept art image. Shortly after the release of Superman, Gunn revealed he was already writing a script for a related project, but he emphasized that this film would not be a straightforward sequel to Superman, though the Man of Steel would be a key character. From the concept art, it appears that David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will return as Superman/Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, and they might even be working together in the film. Since this isn't a direct Superman movie, could it be a Lex Luthor solo film?
Superman, which was written and directed by James Gunn, was released two months ago to positive reviews. It has grossed over $600 million to date, currently ranking seventh at the box office this year. The next project in the DC Universe (DCU), the series Peacemaker Season 2, is currently airing on Crave, and the next film, Supergirl, is set to be released next June. In addition, the film Clayface is currently in production with a tentative release date of next September, and the Lanterns TV series will also premiere next year.
In 2022, Warner Bros. decided to reboot the DC film series and appointed James Gunn and Aquaman series producer Peter Safran as co-CEOs of DC Studios. The first project in this new universe, the animated series Creature Commandos, premiered on StackTV last year. As the first live-action film in the rebooted DCU, Superman features a brand new cast of comic book characters, including David Corenswet (The Politician) as Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent, Emmy Best Actress winner Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult (the X-Men franchise) as the villain Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind) as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion (Castle) as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl.
The DCU is similar to other cinematic universes in that different films and series are interconnected, and characters appear in various projects. For example, Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), the protagonist of Creature Commandos, appeared in the Superman film. He also appeared in Peacemaker Season 2 with Hawkgirl, Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn). Green Lantern Guy Gardner is also one of the main characters in the live-action Lanterns series, which is currently in production. Furthermore, María Gabriela de Faría and Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) appeared as Angela Spica/The Engineer and Supergirl in Superman, respectively. They are then slated to appear in the upcoming films The Authority and Supergirl.
