Emmys 2025: Adolescence Becomes the Biggest Winner of the Night

The annual television industry event, the Primetime Emmy Awards, was recently held. The miniseries Adolescence emerged as the biggest winner of the year, securing six major awards. The new series The Studio won four major awards, making it the big winner in the comedy category.

In the Drama Series category, awards were more evenly distributed this year. The new series The Pitt and Severance won three and two major awards, respectively. The Pitt took home Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor (Noah Wyle), and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Katherine LaNasa). Severance won Outstanding Lead Actress (Britt Lower) and Outstanding Supporting Actor (Tramell Tillman). Notably, Noah Wyle, who was nominated five consecutive times for ER over twenty years ago, finally won his first Emmy. Tramell Tillman also made history as the first Black and openly gay actor to win this award. Outstanding Directing went to Adam Randall for Slow Horses, and Outstanding Writing was awarded to Dan Gilroy for Andor.

In the Comedy Series category, the new show The Studio swept four major awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor (Seth Rogen), Outstanding Directing (Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg), and Outstanding Writing (Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory, and Frida Perez), solidifying its position as the big winner. It's worth noting that Seth Rogen, who served as producer, lead actor, writer, and director for the series, collectively won four awards. Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder won Outstanding Lead Actress and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Hacks, respectively, with Smart winning the former award for the fourth consecutive season. Jeff Hiller won Outstanding Supporting Actor for Somebody Somewhere.

Compared to the other two categories, the Limited or Anthology Series or Movie categories saw a more concentrated outcome. Adolescence won a total of six major awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Directing (Philip Barantini), Outstanding Writing (Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham), Outstanding Lead Actor (Stephen Graham), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Owen Cooper), and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Erin Doherty), sweeping all categories for which it was nominated and becoming the clear big winner. Stephen Graham, who also served as a producer and writer for the series, won three awards. Owen Cooper, in his debut acting role, became the youngest Emmy award winning actor. Cristin Milioti won Outstanding Actress for The Penguin.

Regarding the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, presented the previous week, The Studio won a total of nine awards, while The Penguin secured eight. Netflix's animated series Arcane and Love, Death + Robots each won four awards, making them the big winners in the animation categories. In the performance categories, Bryan Cranston, a four-time Emmy winner for Best Actor for Breaking Bad, won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for The Studio, marking his seventh Emmy win. Oscar Best Actress Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins) won Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for Bridgerton, becoming the first actor to win this award for a live-action series. Former U.S. President Barack Obama won Outstanding Narrator for the third time for the documentary series Our Oceans.

Overall, HBO and HBO Max garnered nine major awards and twenty-one Creative Arts Emmys, totaling thirty awards and emerging as the leading network. Netflix won six major awards (all from Adolescence) and twenty-four Creative Arts Emmys, also reaching a total of thirty awards. In terms of individual programs, The Studio led the pack with a total of thirteen awards.
