Box Office History Made: Spider-Man: Brand New Day Shatters Endgame Domestic Record with $360M Debut

Just days after swings into theaters, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already grossed over $900 million worldwide, rocketing to the fourth spot on the 2026 global box office chart while setting historic domestic opening benchmarks.

Reporting from Deadline, Spider-Man: Brand New Day posted a staggering $360 million opening weekend in North America. The Web-Slinger officially surpassed the long-standing $357 million domestic record held by Avengers: Endgame (2019).

  • Friday Launch: The film kicked off its run with nearly $170 million on Friday alone, setting a new single-day opening record.

  • Weekend Legs: It followed up with strong holds on Saturday (~$102 million) and Sunday (~$89 million), placing just behind Endgame’s single-day weekend numbers.

  • Global Debut: Worldwide, Brand New Day pulled in $932 million over its opening weekend—the second-largest global debut in cinema history behind Avengers: Endgame ($1.22 billion).

This historic debut marks a record-breaking opening for both Sony Pictures and the entire Spider-Man franchise. In an era where Marvel’s theatrical consistency has faced skepticism and talk of "superhero fatigue," this release proves that audience appetite for Spider-Man remains unmatched. For context, the combined global totals of Marvel's previous two releases—Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps—hovered around $900 million combined, a figure Brand New Day matched in just three days.

Driven by the Spidey craze, the total North American box office for the weekend surged past $430 million, breaking overall weekend records. Holding strong in second place, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (also starring Tom Holland) added over $50 million in its third domestic weekend, bringing its global total to $911 million. Industry analysts project Spider-Man: Brand New Day will cross the $1 billion threshold shortly, positioning it to eclipse Toy Story 5, Michael, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to become the highest-grossing film of 2026.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and written by Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers (The MCU Spider-Man trilogy) and Justin Kuritzkes (Challengers). Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker, navigating a lonely new reality. Joining him are several returning MCU veterans: Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/ The Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/ Hulk, and Michael Mando, finally returning as Mac Gargan/ Scorpion. In an exciting casting crossover, Marvin Jones III will make his live-action debut as the crime boss Tombstone, a character he previously voiced in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Despite the memory-wipe at the end of the previous film, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are confirmed to return as MJ and Ned. New additions to the cast include Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Emmy winner Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear), Emmy winner Tramell Tillman (Severance) and Eman Esfandi (Ahsoka).

Marvel Studios kicked off Phase 6 of the MCU last year with The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Compared to prior phases, Phase 6 maintains a significantly tighter slate of theatrical releases, featuring just four known titles:

  • The Fantastic Four: First Steps

  • Spider-Man: Brand New Day

  • Avengers: Doomsday

  • Avengers: Secret Wars

At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel announced its expansion beyond Phase 6, slating feature films for Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3 in 2028. On the television front, the first half of the year saw the releases of Wonder Man, Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, and The Punisher: One Last Kill special event, to be followed in October by the live-action series VisionQuest starring Paul Bettany.
