The Truth is Out There (Again): Ryan Coogler to Direct The X-Files Reboot Starring Danielle Deadwyler

The iconic sci-fi phenomenon The X-Files is officially returning to television, and this time, it is under the creative vision of Ryan Coogler, the acclaimed director behind the Black Panther franchise and Sinners.

Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson) has been cast as the lead protagonist of the X-Files reboot.

According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Hulu has officially ordered a pilot episode for the X-Files reboot. BAFTA Best Original Screenplay winner Ryan Coogler (Sinners) will write and direct the pilot, while Jennifer Yale (See) will serve as showrunner. Danielle Deadwyler, whose performances in Till and The Piano Lesson have garnered immense critical acclaim, has been cast as the lead protagonist. Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena. While only the pilot has been ordered so far, a full series order is expected, given Coogler’s track record. Once greenlit, the series is expected to stream on Disney+ internationally.

The original X-Files premiered in 1993, spawning eleven seasons and two feature films (Fight the Future and I Want to Believe). Regarded as one of the best series of the 90s, it won three Golden Globes for Best Drama Series and made household names of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Fans are already speculating whether the original duo will make cameo appearances in this new iteration. This reboot joins a growing list of "prestige" genre revivals at Hulu, including the recently announced Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel pilot directed by Oscar Best Director winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland).

Ryan Coogler is currently one of Hollywood's most sought-after directors. His recent film, Sinners, made history this year by receiving a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Just days ago, he also took home the BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay. After completing work on The X-Files, Coogler is expected to return to the MCU to write and direct Black Panther III.
