Nine Years Later: Disney Drops Final Trailer for Zootopia 2
Zootopia 2 is set to be released in two months, and Disney recently released the final trailer:
Zootopia 2 will premiere in Canada on November 26th, directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard (Encanto), with Bush also contributing to the screenplay. In addition to the returning cast from the first film, Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) will voice Gary the snake, who is pursued by the two protagonists. Colombian singer Shakira, Fortune Feimster (The Mindy Project), Emmy winner Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), and Jean Reno (Da 5 Bloods) will voice Gazelle the gazelle singer, Nibbles the beaver, Dr. Fuzzby the quokka, and Bushron the goat police officer, respectively. Michael Giacchino, the Oscar-winning composer for Up, will also return to score the sequel.
After cracking the biggest case in Zootopia’s history, rookie cops Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman) find their partnership isn’t as solid as they thought when Chief Bogo (voice of Idris Elba) orders them to join the Partners in Crisis counseling program. But it doesn’t take long for their partnership to be put to the ultimate test when they find themselves on the twisting trail of a mystery tied to the arrival of a venomous snake in the animal metropolis.

Last year, Jared Bush took over as the Chief Creative Officer of Disney Animation, succeeding Jennifer Lee, who is now focused on creating and directing the Frozen series sequels. Moana 2, which Bush co-wrote and premiered late last year, surpassed its predecessor at the box office, grossing over $1 billion and becoming the third highest-grossing film of last year. The first Zootopia also earned over $1 billion, so if this sequel can surpass that figure, it would undoubtedly be a very strong start for Jared Bush in his new role. Looking ahead, Walt Disney Animation Studios is expected to release an original film next year and Frozen 3 in 2027. Disney's Pixar had a disappointing box office run this year with its new film Elio, which grossed around $150 million only. Therefore, Zootopia 2 is quite important for Disney's overall box office performance this year.
Additionally, the race for next year’s Oscar Best Animated Feature is currently wide open, with no single, clear frontrunner. Potential nominees so far include:
Arco (Winner of the Cristal for a Feature Film at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival)
Scarlet (The new work from director Mamoru Hosoda, known for Japan Academy Film Prize for Animation of the Year winners like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, The Boy and the Beast, and Mirai)

I have seen both Arco and Scarlet and currently prefers the former, but wonders if Zootopia 2 will manage to become the frontrunner once it's released.
