The New Cloverfield? Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor Star in The End of Oak Street Trailer
Warner Bros. has officially released the teaser trailer for The End of Oak Street, a high-concept sci-fi thriller that has immediately sparked theories regarding its connection to the Cloverfield universe.
The End of Oak Street will be released in Canada on August 14. It is written and directed by David Robert Mitchell (It Follows), marking his first new work in eight years. Portions of the film were shot with IMAX-certified digital cameras. It stars Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables), Emmy winner Ewan McGregor (Halston), Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth). Michael Giacchino, the Oscar winner for Up, will serve as the composer. The film is produced by J.J. Abrams (the Star Wars sequel trilogy), and is filled with the same sense of mystery as his previous works.
After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighbourhood to someplace unknown, the Platt family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings. When people hear the title of this movie, they might be reminded of the 2016 film 10 Cloverfield Lane, a companion piece to the film, Cloverfield, which used a handheld camera style to capture a monster attacking New York City, and was also produced by J. J. Abrams with Michael Giacchino as the composer. Cloverfield released two companion pieces in 2016 and 2018, 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox. The overall stories of these two films did not have much connection to Cloverfield, and the word "Cloverfield" was only added to their titles shortly before their release.
Among them, The Cloverfield Paradox attempted to explain the relationship between the three films: the particle collision experiment in the movie tore the fabric of space-time, causing several dimensions to collide with each other and unleashing various monsters and demons. This explains the mystery of why the monster suddenly appeared in New York in Cloverfield, as these creatures came to the Earth of the Cloverfield film from other dimensions. At the same time, this experiment also caused issues across different points in time, which is why an experiment conducted in 2028 could release a monster onto the Earth of 2008. Additionally, a character in the movie encounters a young girl on Earth who has been separated from her parents; he later hides with her in an underground shelter, which directly echoes the underground shelter in 10 Cloverfield Lane. In the final scene of The Cloverfield Paradox, we see a massive monster on Earth similar to the one in Cloverfield, but it appears much larger than in the previous work, tall enough to breach the clouds. Therefore, we can infer that this monster is different from the one in Cloverfield and is more like an adult-form monster. Furthermore, Suzanne Cryer, who played Leslie—the woman attempting to seek help at the end of 10 Cloverfield Lane—also plays a television interview host in The Cloverfield Paradox, confirming that the films take place in different parallel dimensions and time points.
Looking at the trailer mentioned above, the street where the main family lives is sent to a prehistoric time, forcing them to face the threat of dinosaurs; the film's synopsis also mentions a mysterious cosmic event. This fits the setting of the Cloverfield series, as the events of The Cloverfield Paradox may have accidentally sent their street to another point in time. However, the Cloverfield series is produced and distributed by Paramount Pictures, while The End of Oak Street is produced and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Could it be that the two film companies reached an agreement on the rights, allowing the latter to produce and release a new installment in the series? We will likely find out in a few months. A few years ago, J. J. Abrams' production company, Bad Robot, began developing a sequel to Cloverfield, hiring Babak Anvari to direct and Joe Barton (Black Doves), to write the script, but unfortunately, there has been no new information since.
