Godzilla Minus Zero Trailer Drops Ahead of NYFF Premiere and November Release
Three years after the release of Godzilla Minus One, its sequel Godzilla Minus Zero is set to hit theaters later this year. The official trailer was released today:
Godzilla Minus Zero will celebrate its world premiere at the New York Film Festival late this month before opening in North America on November 6. Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki (Godzilla Minus One, Stand by Me Doraemon 1 & 2), select sequences were filmed using IMAX-certified digital cameras, marking the first Japanese production to utilize this format. Returning cast members from the previous installment include Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Kuranosuke Sasaki, and Sakura Ando. Joining the sequel's ensemble are Mainichi Film Award Best Actress winner Masami Nagasawa (Before We Vanish), Min Tanaka, and Miou Tanaka.
War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.
The previous entry, Godzilla Minus One, premiered in Japan in 2023. Grossing over $100 million globally on a budget of roughly $10 million, it became the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film of the year and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects—becoming the first non-American film to win the category. In postwar Japan, a new terror rises; Godzilla. Will the devastated people be able to survive... let alone fight back? Following the completion of Godzilla Minus Zero, director Takashi Yamazaki is set to write and direct his English-language directorial debut feature, Grandgear.
In addition to Toho's Japanese Godzilla franchise, Warner Bros. launched its Hollywood MonsterVerse in 2014, producing two standalone Godzilla films, one Kong film, and two Godzilla x Kong mash-ups, with a third entry, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, slated for release next March. On the small screen, the franchise has expanded into animation with Skull Island and live-action television with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
