House of the Dragon Star Matt Smith to Play Villain in New Star Wars Movie!

Pre-production for the Star Wars film Star Wars: Starfighter is in full swing, and a new casting announcement has just been made!

Matt Smith, the star of House of the Dragon, will play the villain in the upcoming Star Wars film, Star Wars: Starfighter.

Deadline recently reported exclusively that Matt Smith will be joining the cast of Star Wars: Starfighter as a villain. The film is set to begin filming this fall and has a tentative release date of May 2027. It will be directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine), written by Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project), and stars Golden Globe winner Ryan Gosling (La La Land) and Mia Goth (Suspiria). The story will take place five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Interestingly, several years ago during the production of The Rise of Skywalker, there were reports that Matt Smith would appear in that film, but it ultimately didn't happen.

Since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Lucasfilm has not released any new Star Wars films, instead focusing on a slate of series like The Mandalorian, Andor, and The Acolyte. The next Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is set to premiere in May of next year. Directed by Jon Favreau, the showrunner of the series and director of the Iron Man films, the script is co-written by him and Dave Filoni, the series writer and Lucasfilm's chief creative officier. In addition to the return of the two main characters, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu, the film will also feature two-time Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) voicing Jabba the Hutt's son, Rotta the Hutt. Sigourney Weaver (Alien series) will play a New Republic leader, Jonny Coyne will reprise his role as an Imperial remnant, and the character Zeb (voiced by Steve Blum) from Star Wars Rebels will also appear.

Beyond these two films, Lucasfilm is also in the process of developing several other Star Wars movies, including:

  • A Jedi origin film directed by James Mangold (Logan).

  • A film written and directed by Oscar-winning screenwriter Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok).

  • A film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, with Daisy Ridley returning as the sequel trilogy's protagonist, Rey.

  • A new film trilogy being written by director/screenwriter Simon Kinberg (X-Men series).

In terms of TV shows, Star Wars's upcoming slate for this year and next year is primarily animated, with the only known live-action project being the second season of Ahsoka.
