Chalamet for Best Actor? Watch the Official Trailer for Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme
Mid-November marks the point when most of the films aspiring for next year's Oscars have premiered, and the competition picture is beginning to clear up. Among them, the film Marty Supreme is already being hailed as one of the best movies of the year, with Timothée Chalamet emerging as a strong favorite for Best Actor.
Marty Supreme is scheduled for release in North America on December 25. Josh Safdie (Good Time, Uncut Gems) directed the film, and co-wrote and co-edited with his frequent collaborator, Ronald Bronstein. Cinematographer Darius Khondji (Uncut Gems) and composer Daniel Lopatin (Uncut Gems) also reunite with the director for this project. The film revolves around the struggles of a young man chasing his table tennis dreams, reportedly inspired by American men's singles champion Marty Reisman. The ensemble cast features SAG Award winner Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Oscar Best Actress winner Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love and the Iron Man franchise), Odessa A'zion (Until Dawn), reality TV host Kevin O'Leary, aapper Tyler Okonma, director Abel Ferrara and Fran Drescher (Hotel Transylvania).
The film premiered as a secret screening at the New York Film Festival last month. Although critics are not yet permitted to release full official reviews, early online reactions have overwhelmingly praised the film, calling it one of the year's best. Crucially, Timothée Chalamet is said to deliver his best performance to date, immediately positioning him as a strong contender for the Academy Award for Best Actor next year. Chalamet is currently one of Hollywood's most highly regarded young actors, having already received two Oscar nominations for Best Actor (Call Me by Your Name and A Complete Unknown). He also recently won the SAG Award winner for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for A Complete Unknown this year. Given that lead performances in Safdie's previous two films, Good Time (Robert Pattinson) and Uncut Gems (Adam Sandler), were considered major career breakthroughs, with Sandler winning a Independent Spirit Award for Best Actor, Chalamet has a strong chance of winning multiple awards for this role. Furthermore, with Marty Supreme this year and Dune: Part Three next year, a film starring Timothée Chalamet has been released every December since 2023, leading to annual "Timothée Chalamet Christmas."
Josh Safdie used to co-direct films with his brother, Benny Safdie, including Good Time and Uncut Gems, for which they won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Director. However, the pair split after Uncut Gems to pursue their own directorial projects. Coincidentally, both brothers directed films focused on sports this year, with Josh Safdie directing the table tennis-focused Marty Supreme and Benny Safdie directing The Smashing Machine, which centers on wrestling and MMA fighter Mark Kerr. The film stars "The Rock" Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), MMA fighter Ryan Bader, UFC heavyweight champion Bas Rutten, and undisputed professional boxer Oleksandr Usyk. It premiered at this year's Venice Film Festival, where Benny Safdie won the Silver Lion for Best Director, and Dwayne Johnson's performance received high praise.
