Humanity’s Savior or Its Doom? Tom Cruise Stars in the First Teaser for Digger

With the final installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise hitting theaters this past summer, fans have been eager to see what Tom Cruise would do next. It turns out his latest project has already finished filming this year and is set for release next year. The first footage has just been released, officially announcing the title: Digger.

Digger is scheduled to open in North American theaters on October 2, 2026. The film boasts an incredibly prestigious lineup behind the camera. Directed by two-time Academy Award winner Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant), the film is written by Iñárritu, Sabina Berman and Oscar Best Original Screenplay winners Alexander Dinelaris Jr. and Nicolás Giacobone (Birdman). Three-time Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki (Gravity, Birdman, The Revenant) reunites with the director as the Director of Photography.

The film features a massive cast of critically acclaimed actors:

  • Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible franchise)

  • Sandra Hüller (Two-time European Film Award Best Actress winner for Toni Erdmann and Anatomy of a Fall)

  • John Goodman (Golden Globe Best Actor winner for Roseanne)

  • Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me By Your Name)

  • Jesse Plemons (Cannes Best Actor for Kinds of Kindness)

  • Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me)

  • Riz Ahmed (Emmy Outstanding Lead Actor winner for The Night of)

  • Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon)

  • Robert John Burke

  • Burn Gorman (Pacific Rim: Uprising)

In a previous interview at the Cannes Film Festival, the director revealed that this will not be another Tom Cruise action flick, but rather a comedy. Early reports indicate the film will follow the world's most powerful man embarking on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity's savior before the disaster he caused destroys everything. This marks Tom Cruise’s first non-action lead role in 13 years (since 2012’s Rock of Ages). Given that five of Iñárritu’s last seven films saw their actors earn Oscar nominations (including Leonardo DiCaprio’s win for The Revenant), many are wondering if this could finally be the role that earns Cruise his first Academy Award for acting.
