The Next Mission: The 5 Upcoming Films Tom Cruise Is Developing!

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning just hit North American theaters last week, raking in a staggering $200 million in its opening week, currently sitting at eighth place in this year's box office rankings. As the title suggests, this installment is the grand finale of the Mission: Impossible series (unless Tom Cruise changes his mind a few years down the road!). However, Tom Cruise and his frequent collaborator, director Christopher McQuarrie, already have numerous ideas brewing and are developing several upcoming film projects, many of which continue to be large-scale action films. But beyond action, Tom Cruise will also star in a comedy film in the next few years, which is sure to be a refreshing change for audiences.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Comedy (North American Release Date: October 2, 2026)

Tom Cruise's next project will be directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the two-time Academy Award winner for Best Director (Birdman, The Revenant). The director recently revealed at the Cannes Film Festival that this film will not be an action movie, but rather an "insane comedy." Early reports indicate that the film will follow the most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.. Tom Cruise's last non-action film was Rock of Ages thirteen years ago. He was nominated for three Academy Awards for acting in the 90s, and out of the director's seven previous films, actors in five of them received Oscar nominations, with Leonardo DiCaprio even winning Best Actor for The Revenant. This makes Tom Cruise's upcoming performance highly anticipated.

The film's cast includes Tom Cruise, two-time European Film Award winner Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann, Anatomy of a Fall), Golden Globe winner John Goodman (Roseanne), Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me By Your Name), Cannes Best Actor winner Jesse Plemons (Kinds of Kindness), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), Emmy winner Riz Ahmed (The Night of), Emma D'Arcy (House of the Dragon), Robert John Burke, and Burn Gorman (Pacific Rim: Uprising). Emmanuel Lubezki, who won three consecutive Academy Awards for Best Cinematography for Gravity, Birdman, and The Revenant, will once again collaborate with the director as the film's Director of Photography.

Deeper

Deadline reported two weeks ago that Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas (the upcoming From the World of John Wick: Ballerina) are undergoing dive training for their next film together. They recently sparked rumors of a romance due to their frequent public appearances. This deep-sea supernatural film will be directed by Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) and tells the story follows an astronaut who encounters a terrifying force while on a deep dive into a never-before-explored trench.

In addition to this film, Tom Cruise and Doug Liman also planned to shoot a movie on the International Space Station a few years ago, though there hasn't been significant progress on that project yet.

Top Gun 3

Top Gun: Maverick was the second highest-grossing film of 2022 and Tom Cruise's highest-grossing film to date, even earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. It's no surprise that the studio began developing a sequel last year. The film's screenwriter and director of the Mission: Impossible series, Christopher McQuarrie, recently revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he and co-writer Ehren Kruger have already completed an outline for Top Gun 3.

Tropic Thunder Les Grossman Spinoff Film

In Ben Stiller's 2008 film Tropic Thunder, Tom Cruise delivered a transformative performance as the bald and foul-mouthed Hollywood studio executive Les Grossman, earning him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Christopher McQuarrie disclosed that he and Tom Cruise are seriously discussing a spinoff film for this character, even brainstorming scenes together during downtime while filming Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.

Days of Thunder Sequel

In 1990, Tom Cruise starred in Days of Thunder, another film directed by Top Gun's Tony Scott, where he met his ex-wife, Golden Globe winner Nicole Kidman. The film centered on intense NASCAR racing. In the same podcast mentioned above, Christopher McQuarrie also indicated that he already has a general outline for a Days of Thunder sequel. If the film genuinely moves forward, it remains to be seen if Nicole Kidman would return to star.
