Political Chaos Reignites: What the Trailer for The Diplomat Season 3 Reveals
As the U.S. continues to spiral into a political vortex, Netflix has released the official trailer for the political thriller series The Diplomat Season 3.
The third season of The Diplomat will premiere on Netflix on October 16, consisting of eight episodes. In addition to the returning cast from the first two seasons, Emmy-winning actor Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) will join the cast, portraying Todd Penn, the husband of the new President, Grace Penn (Allison Janney). At the end of last season, U.S. Ambassador to the UK Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) discovered that the conspiracy from the first two seasons originated with then-Vice President Grace Penn. Hal directly exposed her to President William Rayburn (Michael McKean). Just as Kate was confronting Grace, Hal delivered the bad news: William Rayburn was dead, and Grace had become the new U.S. President.
In Season Three, Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want. She just accused Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) of hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she’s after the VP’s job. But now the President is dead, Kate’s husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) may have inadvertently killed him, and Grace Penn is leader of the free world. None of this slows Hal’s campaign to land Kate the vice presidency. Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and an unnerving bond with First Gentleman Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford).
The series was created by Debora Cahn (Homeland). Its first season premiered in 2023 and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama. The second season premiered last year and received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series. Lead actress Keri Russell was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performances in both seasons. Although the third season has not yet premiered, Netflix renewed the series for a fourth season a few months ago.
