Guillermo del Toro Unveils Frankenstein Teaser!

Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro, known for his mastery of fantasy and gothic horror, has a new film hitting screens this year: an adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel Frankenstein.

Netflix's annual TUDUM event yesterday unveiled the latest news and trailers for its upcoming series and films, including the teaser trailer for Frankenstein. The movie is set to premiere on Netflix this November. Written and directed by the acclaimed Guillermo del Toro, whose works include the Oscar-winning animated film Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio and the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water, this adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel focuses on a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

The film boasts an impressive cast:

  • Golden Globe Award winner Oscar Isaac (Show Me a Hero) as Victor Frankenstein

  • Jacob Elordi (Euphoria) as Frankenstein's Monster

  • Mia Goth (Suspiria) as Elizabeth Lavenza, Frankenstein's fiancée

  • Two-time Academy Awards winner Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained) as Dr. Pretorious, the villain from Bride of Frankenstein

Other key cast members include Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front), Lars Mikkelsen (House of Cards), David Bradley (Argus Filch from the Harry Potter film series), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones). Del Toro's frequent collaborators, cinematographer Dan Laustsen and Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water), are also rejoining the director for this project.

Frankenstein has seen numerous film and television adaptations over the years. Notably, Universal Pictures' 2017 film The Mummy was intended to kickstart their "Dark Universe" cinematic universe, with Bride of Frankenstein planned as the second film. That project had Bill Condon (Beauty and the Beast) set to direct and Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie (Girl, Interrupted) eyed for the lead. Academy Award winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) was originally slated to play Frankenstein's Monster in that film. However, The Mummy's poor box office performance and critical reception led to the demise of both the "Dark Universe" and Bride of Frankenstein.

Guillermo del Toro has previously expressed his desire to adapt Bride of Frankenstein, and Christoph Waltz's character in this new film is indeed from Bride of Frankenstein. It remains to be seen if del Toro will have the opportunity to direct that film in the future. However, Maggie Gyllenhaal's (The Lost Daughter) The Bride!, which is an adaptation of Bride of Frankenstein, is set to be released in March of next year. That film stars Jessie Buckley (I'm Thinking of Ending Things) as the female lead and former Batman actor and Golden Globe winner Christian Bale (Vice) as Frankenstein's Monster. Thus, it's unlikely Guillermo del Toro will release another similar film in the short term.
