The Force Returns to Theaters: New Mandalorian and Grogu Trailer Arrives
Following last week’s Super Bowl teaser directed by Jon Favreau, Lucasfilm has officially released a new full-length theatrical trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to premiere in North America on May 22. The film will continue the story of the series The Mandalorian and is directed by the show's creator, Jon Favreau (Iron Man), who co-created the story with the series' writer and Lucasfilm's new president and Chief Creative Officer, Dave Filoni. In addition to the return of the two main characters, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu, the cast includes two-time Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) who will voice Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt. Sigourney Weaver (Alien franchise) will play a New Republic leader, Jonny Coyne will return as an Imperial remnant, and Steve Blum will return to voice the character Zeb from Star Wars Rebels. In arguably the biggest shock of the trailer, Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese (The Departed) makes a surprise voice cameo. The film's score will be composed by two-time Academy Award winner Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther, Oppenheimer), who scored the first two seasons of the series.
The film takes place between Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu. The series premiered on Disney+ in 2019 to widespread acclaim. The first two seasons were both nominated for Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series and won several Creative Arts Emmys for technical achievements. The series was originally renewed for a fourth season, but with the announcement of this film, it's unclear whether a fourth season will still be made. Over the past few years, Lucasfilm has also released three other related series: The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The plot of Ahsoka also revolves around fighting Imperial warlords, suggesting a stronger connection between that series and this film.
Lucasfilm also released a new poster for the film.
Since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Lucasfilm has not released any new Star Wars films, instead focusing on a slate of series like The Mandalorian, Andor, and The Acolyte. In addition to The Mandalorian and Grogu, another Star Wars film, Star Wars: Starfighter, has completed filming and scheduled to be released in May 2027. It's directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) and the cast includes Golden Globe Best Actor winner Ryan Gosling (La La Land). The story will take place five years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and will not be related to previous films.
Beyond these two films, Lucasfilm is also in the process of developing several other Star Wars movies, including:
A Jedi origin film directed by James Mangold (Logan).
A film written and directed by Oscar-winning screenwriter Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok).
A film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, with Daisy Ridley returning as the sequel trilogy's protagonist, Rey.
A new film trilogy being written by director/screenwriter Simon Kinberg (X-Men series).
In terms of TV shows, Star Wars's upcoming slate for this year is primarily animated, including Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, with the only known live-action project being the second season of Ahsoka.
