Leonardo DiCaprio Stars! One Battle After Another Unveils New Trailer!
Surprisingly, One Battle After Another, the new film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, was not selected for this year's Toronto International Film Festival or Venice Film Festival, whose selections were recently announced. However, they've now released the following trailer:
One Battle After Another is set to open in North America on September 26th. The film is written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who won Best Director awards at three major film festivals for his work on Punch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood, and The Master. Inspired by Thomas Pynchon's novel "Vineland," the movie stars Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn (Mystic River, Milk), Oscar winner Benicio del Toro (Traffic), Regina Hall (Scary Movie), singer Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti (Presumed Innocent). Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead guitarist and frequent collaborator with Anderson, also composes the score.
From the trailer, it appears the film, like the original novel, is highly political. Leonardo DiCaprio's character, a rebel/insurgent, will confront Sean Penn's character, a government soldier. In today's highly politicized American society, this politically charged film will undoubtedly spark debate and polarized reviews. The film's reported production budget is a hefty $140 million, making it Anderson's largest-scale work to date. It's no wonder that studios are reportedly very anxious about its box office performance, choosing to avoid the August/September Venice and Toronto film festivals to prevent negative reviews from potentially dragging down the film's success.

Last month, both The New York Times and Rolling Stone magazine selected the 100 best films of this century so far, and Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Phantom Thread all made the list. However, Anderson's previous works haven't always garnered significant attention in general audience. With the consistently popular Leonardo DiCaprio starring in this film, it remains to be seen if it will attract more widespread interest.
