Avatar: Fire and Ash Official Trailer and Poster Revealed! Releasing This December!
Three years after its predecessor, the third installment in the Avatar series, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is set to hit theaters this December. The studio recently dropped its first trailer:
Avatar: Fire and Ash will be released in North America on December 19th. James Cameron, director of Titanic and the first two Avatar films, returns to direct and co-write the screenplay with previous collaborators Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. In addition to the returning cast from the first two movies, David Thewlis (Harry Potter film series) and Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones) will also star. Chaplin is featured on the poster and will portray the leader of the Ash People, a new clan introduced in this film. Avatar: The Way of Water had a runtime of 192 minutes, and this installment is also reported to exceed three hours.
The first Avatar film, released in 2009, grossed over $2.9 billion worldwide on a budget of approximately $240 million, making it the highest-grossing film in cinematic history. While it was briefly surpassed by Avengers: Endgame in 2019, it reclaimed the top spot after a re-release in China in 2021. Avatar: The Way of Water, released in 2022, brought in $2.3 billion, securing its place as the third highest-grossing film of all time. Beyond their immense box office success, the Avatar films have also received critical acclaim. The first Avatar won three technical Oscars for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects, while Avatar: The Way of Water won for Best Visual Effects. It's highly anticipated that Avatar: Fire and Ash will also be a strong contender for the Best Visual Effects Oscar next year. However, this year's highest-grossing film to date, Nezha 2, has already earned $2.2 billion globally. It remains to be seen if Avatar: Fire and Ash can surpass that mark.
In addition to the trailer, 20th Century Studios also released the latest poster:
While there was a thirteen-year gap between the first two Avatar films, this third installment is able to release just three years after the second because both movies were filmed concurrently. Avatar fourth and fifth installments are tentatively scheduled for 2029 and 2031, respectively. However, the production for these two films has not yet officially begun, with only some scenes for the fourth movie being shot to avoid significant age changes in the child actors. Besides the cast from the previous films, Oscar Best Actress winner Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) will also join the cast for the fourth and fifth installments.
Deadline reported last year that James Cameron plans to adapt two historical books by Charles R. Pellegrino, The Last Train from Hiroshima and Ghosts of Hiroshima, into a film, which he will direct himself. Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter reported last month that after completing Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron will also adapt Joe Abercrombie's fantasy novel The Devils into a film. If the director indeed takes on these two projects after Avatar: Fire and Ash, it's likely that Avatar films four and five will face further delays.
