Face/Off Reunion! Nicolas Cage to Star in John Woo’s New Mafia Film!!

Two years ago, Academy Award-winning director John Woo (The Killer) returned to Hollywood to film two movies. Next, he will direct a New York mafia movie and reunite with Nicolas Cage, the star of his hit film Face/Off.

Deadline exclusively reported last week that Hong Kong Film Award-winning director John Woo will direct Gambino, a crime biopic centered on notorious New York mob boss Carlo Gambino. Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas), who previously worked with Woo on Face/Off and Windtalkers, will star. The script is written by George Gallo (Bad Boys) and Academy Award Best Original Screenplay winner Nick Vallelonga (Green Book).

According to Deadline, the film will follow Carlo Gambino, a butcher’s son from Sicily, who rules New York’s underworld with quiet authority. But when his death sends shockwaves through the city, Pulitzer-winning journalist Jimmy Breslin follows the trail he left behind to uncover the man beneath the legend. Through the voices of those who loved him and those who feared him, Breslin peels back the composure that masked Gambino’s ruthlessness, revealing how this outsider rose to redefine power, loyalty and the American dream.

John Woo directed several films in Hollywood in the 90s and 00s, including Face/Off and Mission: Impossible 2, before returning to Asia for co-productions like Red Cliff and The Crossing, and receiving a Venice Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. His return to Hollywood two years ago saw him direct Silent Night and a remake of The Killer; both films received generally mixed reviews. Nicolas Cage has been experiencing a career resurgence in recent years, delivering acclaimed performances in films like Mandy, Pig, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Dream Scenario, and Longlegs. He even received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for Dream Scenario, his first nomination in 21 years.

His upcoming projects are highly anticipated:

  • He will star in Madden, directed by Independent Spirit Award winner David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook).

  • He will return to voice Spider-Noir in the live-action Spider-Man series Spider-Noir, reprising the role he voiced in the Oscar-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

  • He is also reportedly set to star in the next season of the critically acclaimed series True Detective.
