Action Goes Global: Massive Expansion Plans for the Extraction Franchise

Nearly three years after the release of Extraction 2, Netflix has finally confirmed that Extraction 3 is officially moving forward.

Deadline reported last week that Chris Hemsworth has officially signed on to return as Tyler Rake in Extraction 3. Sam Hargrave, who directed the first two installments, will return to the director's chair. Golshifteh Farahani (Nik Khan) and Idris Elba (Alcott), who made a cameo in the previous film, will also return as leads. The script for this installment is being written by David Weil (Invasion), with filming expected to begin this summer.

In addition to the third main film, Netflix is expanding the franchise with a South Korean spin-off titled Tygo. This project will be directed by Lee Sang-yong and written by Cha Woo-jin, the duo behind The Roundup: No Way Out. The star-studded cast includes Don Lee (The Roundup franchise), Lee Jin-uk (Squid Game), and Lisa from the global K-pop group Blackpink. The film follows Tygo (Don Lee), a former child soldier turned mercenary who launches a revenge mission through Korea’s criminal underworld after an operation goes awry.

The Extraction universe will also expand to television with an eight-episode series titled Mercenary: An Extraction Series. Created by Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead), the series is directed by Louise Hooper (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) and Tim Southam (Lost in Space). The cast is led by Omar Sy (Lupin), alongside Boyd Holbrook (The Sandman), Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones), May Calamawy (Moon Knight), and Waleed Zuaiter. The series tells the story of a mercenary (Omar Sy) who embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, he must navigate life-or-death choices while confronting deep emotional wounds.
