Eddie Redmayne Lands Lead Role in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Highly Anticipated English Debut

Following his ventures into French cinema with The Truth and Korean cinema with Broker, the director of Shoplifters, Hirokazu Kore-eda, is set to direct his first English-language feature starring Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne.

As reported by Deadline last week, Searchlight Pictures has officially boarded the latest project from acclaimed Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters). The still-untitled English-language feature will star Oscar Best Actor winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything), who is also set to produce.

Hirokazu Kore-eda remains one of the most prominent directors in world cinema. A three-time Japan Academy Film Prize winner for Best Director, his 2018 film Shoplifters won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. 2026 is shaping up to be a busy year for the director, as he is expected to release two other films:

  1. The Sheep in the Box: Starring Haruka Ayase, rumored to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this May.

  2. A Live-Action Adaptation of Look Back: Based on the acclaimed short manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto.

After winning the Academy Award for The Theory of Everything and receiving a nomination for The Danish Girl, Redmayne spent much of the last few years focusing on the stage. His performance in the West End revival of Cabaret earned him an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2022. Recently, he successfully transitioned back to the screen with the hit series The Day of the Jackal, earning a Golden Globe nomination. This new collaboration with Kore-eda marks a move back into cinema, following his upcoming February 2027 film, Panic Carefully.
