The Seductive World of a Gambler: First Look at Netflix's Ballad of a Small Player
Netflix today released the first teaser trailer for Ballad of a Small Player. The performances from two-time Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Venice Film Festival Best Actress winner Deanie Ip (A Simple Life) are quite eye-catching!
Ballad of a Small Player is set to premiere on Netflix on October 29th. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name, directed by Edward Berger, the director of the Oscar Best International Feature All Quiet on the Western Front and the BAFTA Best Film Conclave. The script is written by Rowan Joffé (28 Weeks Later). The cast includes two-time Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell (In Bruges, The Banshees of Inisherin), Fala Chen (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Venice Film Festival Best Actress winner Deanie Ip (A Simple Life), two-time Olivier Award winner Alex Jennings, and Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton). The director's last two films received numerous Oscar nominations, and he has reunited with his previous production team for this project, including Oscar-winning cinematographer James Friend and Oscar-winning composer Volker Bertelmann from All Quiet on the Western Front, as well as BAFTA-winning editor Nick Emerson from Conclave.
Filmed in Macau and Hong Kong, the movie tells the story of a high-stakes gambler lying low in Macau, China. When his past and his debts start to catch up with him, he encounters a kindred spirit who might just hold the key to his salvation. The film will premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival and is described as a seductive character study. Colin Farrell has won both a Golden Globe for film (The Banshees of Inisherin) and for TV (The Penguin) in the past three years, so we are excited to see if his performance in this film is equally impressive. From the trailer, it appears that Deanie Ip will be playing an opponent of Colin Farrell's character in a gambling match, and her look and performance are highly anticipated!

Edward Berger's last two films, All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave, both received numerous awards. The former won seven BAFTAs, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, and four Oscars, including Best International Feature Film. The latter won four BAFTAs, including Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best British Film, and an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. It remains to be seen if Ballad of a Small Player can achieve similar success.
