New Trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Arrives as Sequel Is Greenlit
28 Years Later was released less than six months ago, and its sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, has already completed production and is set for release next month. The latest trailer for the film was released two weeks ago:
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is scheduled for release in North America on January 16 next year. The film is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels) while Alex Garland (28 Days Later, 28 Years Later) returns to write the script. Ralph Fiennes, Jack O'Connell, Alfie William, Erin Kellyman, and Chi Lewis-Parry will reprise their roles from the previous film. 28 Days Later lead star and Oscar Best Actor winner Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) is also reportedly returning for this film. In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's (Alfie Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell) becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.
Released in 2002, 28 Days Later was well received and grossed $80 million on an $8 million budget. Its sequel, 28 Weeks Later (2007), was also well-received. 18 years later, the studio released 28 Years Later last year, which was also critically acclaimed and grossed over $130 million—almost the combined total of the first two films. The swift turnaround for The Bone Temple is due to the studio commencing production immediately after 28 Years Later wrapped shooting. The first film focused on a family's experiences in the apocalypse, with young Spike (Alfie William) meeting Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) midway through and being taken to the latter's "temple" built with human bones. By the end of the film, Spike runs away to live alone and encounters the cult leader Jimmy (Jack O'Connell) and his followers. Based on the title and trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the film will center on the conflict between Dr. Kelson and Jimmy's cult.
Even though 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is not set for release until next month, the first online reviews have already been released and are overwhelmingly positive. Deadline exclusively reported that Sony Pictures has decided to greenlight a third film in the 28 Years Later series. Alex Garland is currently writing the script and Cillian Murphy is in talks with the studio to potentially star in the third film. While a director has not yet been chosen, there is a possibility that Danny Boyle, who directed 28 Days Later and 28 Years Later, might return to direct.
