Benoit Blanc's Most Dangerous Case: Official Trailer Released for Wake Up Dead Man

The Knives Out series, starring 007 actor Daniel Craig, is set to release its third installment next month—Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Netflix recently released the official trailer:

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on December 12. Rian Johnson returns to write and direct, just as he did for the previous two films. The film follows Benoit Blanc as he investigates what is described as the most dangerous case of his life. While the past two films centered on murder mysteries, they maintained a lighthearted, comedic tone. Although this installment appears to have a more thriller-like atmosphere, it will certainly feature the director's and Benoit Blanc's signature style of humor. Former James Bond actor Daniel Craig returns to star as the detective Benoit Blanc. He is joined by an all-star cast including:

  • Emmy Best Actor winner Josh O'Connor (The Crown)

  • Golden Globe Best Actress winner Glenn Close (The Wife)

  • Marvel villain Thanos actor Josh Brolin

  • Mila Kunis (Jupiter Ascending)

  • Marvel's Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner

  • Emmy Best Actress winner Kerry Washington (Scandal)

  • BAFTA winner Andrew Scott (Sherlock)

  • Venice Film Festival Best Actress winner Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla)

  • Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders)

  • Critics' Choice Award winner Thomas Haden Church (Sideways)

The first film, Knives Out, premiered in 2019, grossing over $300 million worldwide on a budget of $40 million. It received very positive reviews, earning nominations for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Awards for Best Comedy. Lionsgate originally distributed the first film but only acquired the distribution rights for a single movie. In 2021, Netflix acquired the rights to two sequels for over $400 million and released the second film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, in 2022. That film also received very positive reviews, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and won the Critics' Choice Award for Best Comedy. This third installment premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) two months ago and has likewise received very positive reviews. I also watched the film at TIFF and particularly liked Josh O'Connor's performance.

Following Wake Up Dead Man, Rian Johnson is set to direct a science fiction film, meaning the next Knives Out film will not be released anytime soon. In addition to the Knives Out franchise, Johnson has spent the last few years creating and directing the mystery series Poker Face for the streaming platform Peacock, which has released two seasons so far. However, Deadline reported exclusively last week that Peacock has decided not to renew the series for a third season. Johnson is now planning to shop the show to other platforms for a potential third and fourth season. Even if a deal is secured, Natasha Lyonne, the star of the first two seasons, will not return. Four-time Emmy winner Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) is slated to take over as the lead of the series. Furthermore, after directing Star Wars: The Last Jedi eight years ago, Johnson was reportedly developing a new Star Wars spinoff trilogy, with plans to direct the first installment, though there appears to be little progress on that front so far.
