Oscars Winner Godzilla Minus One is Now Available on Netflix!
After months of waiting, the Japanese monster movie Godzilla Minus One is finally available on Netflix!
Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the director of the two STAND BY ME: Doraemon 3D films, and starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki, Godzilla Minus One took place in postwar Japan where a traumatized former fighter pilot joins the civilian effort to fight off a massive nuclear-enhanced monster attacking their shores.
The movie was released in Japan last November and in North America last December. With a budget of about $10 million, the movie grossed over $100 million at the box office, making it the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film of last year. At the same time, the movie has been highly praised by international critics and filmmakers, including Oscars Best Directors Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans) and Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer). In March, the film won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, making it the first non-English language film to do so. Despite the movie's popularity, it did not release in multiple Asian markets, leading to speculation about whether it was related to sensitive elements of World War II such as kamikaze and Type 0 fighters, and whether the rights of the movie were owned by streaming platforms. Last month, the movie was officially released on home media and Prime Video in Japan, but there was no news about overseas home media and streaming, which once again aroused speculations. Finally, the filme is available on Netflix in Canada and other countries.
