Gundam Leads Found? Noah Centineo and Sydney Sweeney Eyed for Live-Action Film
The live-action Gundam movie, which has been in development for many years, appears to have finally found its leads!
Noah Centineo and Sydney Sweeney are in talks to star in the live-action Gundam movie.
Nexus Point News exclusively reported last week that Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I've Loved Before franchise) is in talks with Legendary Pictures and may star in the live-action Gundam movie. The film is written and directed by Jim Mickle (Sweet Tooth). Sydney Sweeney (Anyone but You) is also set to star. The movie is reportedly scheduled to begin filming next spring and is expected to be released in 2027 at the earliest.
The film is reportedly adapted from the 1996 OVA series, Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. It takes place during the One Year War of the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime, specifically when the Principality of Zeon was carrying out military repression within the Earth's atmosphere. The story follows Shiro Amada, an Earth Federation Forces Mobile Suit pilot, who encounters a Zeon unit while reporting to the East Asian front. He and an enemy pilot, Aina Sahalin, are endangered together and must cooperate to survive their time adrift, during which they develop romantic feelings for each other. After Shiro is assigned to the East Asian front, however, he and Aina find themselves enemies on the battlefield. There, Shiro firmly believes and acts on the possibility of reconciliation and love with an enemy, even on a battlefield that completely negates human ethics. Reports suggest that Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo's roles will correspond to Aina Sahalin and Shiro Amada, respectively.
Hollywood has attempted to adapt popular Japanese anime and manga into live-action films numerous times, with almost every attempt failing to find success. Fans will likely remember the tragedies of Dragonball Evolution, Ghost in the Shell, and Death Note. In 2019, director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron (Avatar franchise) brought Alita: Battle Angel to the big screen. While its critical reception was considered one of the best in recent years for an anime adaptation, its high production cost resulted in a financial loss. However, the duo still hopes to film a sequel. Looking ahead, in addition to Gundam, major Hollywood studios plan to adapt other Japanese works, including Naruto, One-Punch Man, and My Hero Academia into live-action films.
